Dear students and colleagues,
It is my great pleasure to welcome you to Hong Kong, where the 17th Asian Physics Olympiad in 2016 (APhO 2016) will take place during 1-9 May 2016, APhO's first time in the city. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is proud to host this exciting and meaningful event, supported by the Education Bureau of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the Hong Kong Physical Society, and the Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education.
Hong Kong is a vibrant metropolis where people work and play with seemingly endless energy. Besides the world-famous harbor view, shops, restaurants and banks, the unique fusion of oriental and western cultures constitutes much to the charm of the city.
2016 is also the 25th Anniversary of HKUST. Her research in science, technology, business, humanities and social science has made much headway in gaining an international reputation in just 25 years. High impact research in Physics has been carried out here since the university was established.
During APhO 2016, student contestants will participate in both theoretical and experimental competitions. Besides, cultural activities will be scheduled for students to learn about scientific and technological developments and get to know the city, cultivate friendships and relax.
Past experience showed that APhOs could have life-changing impacts on students. Many of them went through the training and the competition with minds sharpened and confidence boosted. Subsequently, they developed their potentials after graduation from high schools. Apart from academic challenges, APhOs offered opportunities for students to broaden their vision. Through building international friendships, they became more understanding, more curious, and more tolerant of other cultures, and viewed themselves as members of an international science community.
More details about this forthcoming event will be announced in due course. For enquiries regarding APhO 2016, please do not hesitate to contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org .
We look forward to seeing you all in Hong Kong in 2016!
